A little more than often do I see people go for the "cheapest guy" only for that same guy costing just as much or more in damages or repairs on that same work! From installing things wrong to breaking other parts in a home system. These guys are usually "jacks of all trades" and have been around plumbing enough to have some good confidence around it. But I have seen one accidentally cut into a gas pipe, which is also a part of plumbing, and not know how to fix it or even have the equipment to fix it. And let's not forget about the videos of the cheap guys who flood homes by cutting corners or just aren't aware of proper plumbing procedures even though a lot of them and other people say plumbing is "easy" and think it shouldn't cost as much as it does. So let's break it down and see how the cheapest guy may not be as cheap as you might think.

We all have the desire to save money and get the best deal, but unfortunately this leads some people to hiring unlicensed people to do their work. This is either because people don't care and want the best deal from some one who will confidently tell them they know how to do it, or they assume someone is licensed because they were lied to and the so called plumber had a business card seemed legit.
For the individuals looking to hire anyone that can do the job as long as it's cheap and know what they're doing such as a handy man or maybe a new plumber who wants to do it on the side, be aware of the risk. These cheap guys don't have insurance to cover you if they cause any major damages like in the video above. Not only that they don't have a license on the line if they decide not to pay for any damages. And if you find a guy who's been doing plumbing for years with a company does it for you it's most likely going to be twice the rate of the cheap guy. When experienced plumbers charge for jobs outside of work it's around $150 an hour, but it's rare and they also don't have insurance or good warranties.
The people who are unlicensed are probably charging around $50 an hour which is good reasonable pay for any tradesmen who just started and wants to make money on the side. But keep in mind some plumbing companies are already paying this hourly rate along with health insurance and other benefits. So with that in mind why would any tradesmen with years of experience that gets paid that much already plus Benifets do work outside of his job for this rate. Not only that they're already working 40 hours at their company so would be expecting overtime pay which would be $75 an hour along with Benifets. So keep that in mind when you hire someone and they tell you they could do a job quick for you, about an hour, and it's only about $50 to repair even $100 is too good to be true. So with price being an indictor of you hiring skilled labor expect to be charged at minimum $250 for any repair by a company with properly licensed employees.
Not only that you can ask one of these cheap guys for a business card or even their ROC #. Arizona only allows companies with proper licensing to do work and it has to be the license type specific to that trade. The ROC# is specific to that business and the license type for plumbers will either be C-37 for commercial plumbers, R-37 for Residential plumbers or CR-37 for both residential and commercial plumbers. And in case your wondering ours is ROC#337578 and ours is a CR-37.
If you're an individual who's looking for licensed and reasonably priced Plumbers I hope you find this helpful. And If you're someone who just wants cheap work even if it means they're unlicensed I hope this is also helpful and prevents you from going through unnecessary costs in damages in repairs.
